Silk Recall

Hold onto your almond milk, folks! Silk and Great Value plant-based beverages have been yanked off shelves across Canada—I guess those cartons wanted an early retirement. Various refrigerated beverages have decided to take a walk on the wild side and have been caught mingling with listeria: says the ever-watchful food inspection agency.

The Recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has dropped a bombshell by recalling a selection of plant-based drinks, potentially contaminated with dangerous listeria. Stores across Canada are under strict orders to cease selling, serving, or distributing 15 specific products from the Silk and Great Value brands.

If you have these ticking time bombs in your fridge, do not consume or use them under any circumstances. Shockingly, these hazardous products were manufactured by none other than Danone Canada. The toxic lineup includes 1.89-litre packages with best-before dates up to and including Oct. 4, 2024, each tagged with their ominous Universal Product Codes (UPCs).

  • Great Value Almond Beverage Unsweetened Original.
  • Great Value Almond Beverage Original.
  • Great Value Almond Beverage Vanilla.
  • Silk Almond and Coconut Unsweetened.
  • Silk Almond Original.
  • Silk Almond Dark Chocolate.
  • Silk Almond Unsweetened.
  • Silk Almond Unsweetened Vanilla.
  • Silk Coconut Original.

The products below have shockingly been recalled in 1.75-litre containers, sending waves of concern, with best-before dates up to and including Oct. 4, 2024, bearing specific UPCs:

  • Silk Oat Original.
  • Silk Oat Vanilla.
  • Silk Oat Dark Chocolate.
  • Silk Oat Unsweetened.
  • Silk Oat Unsweetened Vanilla.
  • Silk Almond and Cashew Unsweetened.
  • Silk Almond and Cashew Unsweetened Vanilla.

Brace yourself: Silk Coconut Unsweetened drinks in 1.89-litre cartons with best-before dates up to and including Sept. 27, 2024, and bearing the UPC 0 25293 00244 9 are being urgently recalled.

The hidden dangers

The federal agency issues a stark warning: food contaminated with listeria may not even look spoiled. Imagine unknowingly consuming it and facing symptoms like vomiting, nausea, fever, aching, headache, and a stiff neck. The CFIA’s recall notice exposes the grim reality behind plant-based beverages – an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak led to this revelation.

Shockingly, there have been reported illnesses tied to these products, though the CFIA conveniently didn’t disclose the number of affected individuals. If you’ve had the misfortune of consuming any of these products and fallen ill, the CFIA strongly urges you to seek medical attention immediately.

This isn’t your average bear of a bacteria

Siyun Wang, a food safety engineering professor at the University of British Columbia, bluntly highlighted the lethal threat of listeria, noting its mortality rate can skyrocket to 30 percent, especially preying on those with weakened immune systems like pregnant women and the elderly.

Shockingly, Wang mentioned that some research hints at pathogens, including listeria, thriving better in plant-based milk than in cow’s milk. In a disconcerting twist, a spokesperson for Danone Canada admitted that the contaminated products were traced back to a specific production line from a third-party manufacturer based in Ontario.

We are deeply troubled by these alarming reports and are responding with utmost urgency, Our immediate focus is on safeguarding our consumers through this rapid recall and rigorously investigating the incident with our third-party manufacturer.

How will people know about this with Trudeau’s Media blackout?

I stumbled upon this because I was Googling Trends to see the latest news. It’s shocking how many Canadians are probably clueless about Google Trends, so how on earth will they learn about this recall? Justin Trudeau’s outrageous media blackout stops major outlets like CBC and Global from sharing on Facebook. It’s absurd that a social media platform everyone relies on can’t be used to alert people about crucial issues like this.

If you’re reading this, you better blast it all over your Facebook to warn your friends and family about this ridiculous recall. I had to toss our Silk Almond Milk because it showed up on the recall list. This stuff isn’t cheap, and frankly, they should pay us back for these kinds of screw-ups. Seriously, how can we trust a brand that’s supposed to look out for us and properly test their products before they hit the shelves, but clearly can’t be bothered?

Conclusion…

Silk recall conclusion

In light of this alarming recall, it’s crucial to stay informed and vigilant about the products in your fridge. The presence of listeria poses a serious threat to public health, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

As consumers, we rely on brands to ensure the safety of their products through meticulous testing and quality control. This incident underscores the ongoing need for transparency and accountability in the food and beverage industry. It’s not just about the immediate recall but also about learning from these episodes to prevent future occurrences.

To ensure everyone stays safe, share this information with family and friends. Awareness is our best defence against potential health risks.
