The Monkeypox Outbreak: A Scare Tactic or Genuine Threat?

The recent monkeypox outbreak has sparked heated debates across the globe. Some see it as a genuine health threat, while others view it as a calculated scare tactic aimed at controlling the public. Let’s delve into the details of the outbreak and explore various perspectives.

Understanding Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease that has been known to science since the 1970s. Historically confined to Central and West Africa, it recently made headlines at an unprecedented scale, raising concerns worldwide. Monkeypox belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox but is clinically less severe.

What are the signs and symptoms of mpox?

Monkeypox stages

After exposure, it may be several days to a few weeks before you develop symptoms. Signs of mpox include:

The rash starts as flat, red bumps, which can be painful. Those bumps turn into blisters, which fill with pus. Eventually, the blisters crust over and fall off. The whole process can last two to four weeks. You can get sores on your mouth, face, hands, feet, penis, vagina or anus.

Not everyone with mpox develops all the symptoms. Different ways you might experience symptoms include:

  • Only a rash (no other symptoms), or other symptoms develop later.
  • Flu-like symptoms, then a rash. Some people don’t get a rash at all.
  • A rash can be widespread, but some people only a have few bumps or blisters.

You can have mpox and not know it. Even if you don’t show many signs of infection, it’s possible that you can still spread it to others through prolonged close contact.

Monkeypox Update: A Global Health Emergency

As of August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the increasing number of monkeypox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and parts of Africa as a public health emergency of international concern.

This declaration highlights the serious nature of the outbreak and the potential for further global spread. While the initial 2022 outbreak outside of Africa was largely contained, this new resurgence is cause for concern.

The Outbreak Data

According to the Government of Canada’s Public Health Services, up-to-date data indicates that monkeypox cases surged significantly in 2022. European and North American countries reported outbreaks that spurred both public and governmental attention. What many found alarming was the rapid spread of the disease beyond its endemic regions, infecting populations with no direct links to the traditional regions associated with monkeypox.

In a detailed study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), epidemiological data points to critical points of transmission and symptoms that complicate detection and treatment. Without early intervention, the virus can spread swiftly among close contacts.

Monkeypox Canadian Data

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the three most impacted provinces in Canada are the very same ones grappling with mass immigration issues. And if you dare to look at where these migrants come from, well… the alarm bells are deafening.

Public Health Response

Governments and health organizations responded swiftly. Quarantine measures, public advisories, and awareness campaigns rolled out at an accelerated pace. Vaccination strategies were debated and implemented even as the public held mixed reactions to what some saw as overzealous measures.

Health Canada highlighted that the majority of cases were transmitted through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, making it crucial for people to be aware and cautious. The public advisory emphasized rigorous testing and contact tracing to curb the spread.

Is It a Scare Tactic?

Critics argue that the response to the monkeypox outbreak has been exaggerated, fostering unnecessary fear. They claim that the rapid dissemination of information and strict measures serve to influence public perception and behaviour, immobilizing people under the guise of public health safety.

Arguments for the scare tactic perspective include:

  • Media Sensationalism: The portrayal of monkeypox in a dramatic fashion to attract viewership and readership can inflate public apprehension beyond the actual threat level.
  • Government Control: Some believe that strict health measures are a step toward increased governmental control, echoing concerns raised during other recent health crises.
  • Economic and Social Impact: Fear-driven measures can have cascading effects on economies and societal interaction, confining people and stunting economic growth.

Addressing Real Concerns

On the other hand, proponents of the stringent measures argue that the seriousness of an unchecked virus should not be underestimated. Public health experts insist that proactive measures, transparency, and rapid information dissemination are essential components of effective disease control.

Points supporting genuine concerns include:

  • Health Risks: The potential for high transmission rates and the harmful effects, especially on vulnerable populations, warrant a cautious approach.
  • Preparedness: Ensuring that healthcare systems are not overwhelmed and that adequate resources are allocated to tackle outbreaks is in society’s best interest.
  • Preventive Measures: Encouraging safe practices among the public can drastically reduce disease spread, protecting both individuals and communities.

Finding a Balance

The challenge lies in balancing effective health measures with public sentiment. It’s crucial to communicate risks clearly without resorting to fear-mongering and to implement policies that protect health while also respecting personal freedoms.

Conclusion

The monkeypox outbreak has undeniably stirred a complex debate. Whether viewed as a well-founded health precaution or a politically motivated scare tactic, the response to monkeypox reflects broader societal tensions and the evolving dynamics between public health and individual freedoms.

  1. This Is my first time coming across your site in blogosphere. Your Instagram page look hilarious. Covid was real, but it was exaggerated to force the vaccine on us. I belive that the rapid outbreaks of Monkeys pox, particularly in Africa, could possibly be a scare tactic to get people to get vaccinated. The bottom line in more dough for the big pharmaceutical companies.

    1. Thanks for visiting. I agree with everything you said.
