What’s that clown up to again? Trudeau sure likes to spend, doesn’t he?
It looks like Trudeau’s playing Santa Claus… in July! Canada’s just announced they’re sending $500 million in military aid to Ukraine. … Now, I know what you’re thinkin’- Canada? Military aid? … Yep, it’s true! Our clown in charge is pulling out all the stops, even training Ukrainian pilots to fly Western fighter jets. So, if you see a moose in a flight suit, don’t be too surprised!
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a pow-wow with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and came out swinging with this new pledge. … This brings Canada’s total contribution to a whopping $13.3 billion! Of course, not everyone’s tickled pink about this. Some folks are saying, Hey, what about us? We’ve got our own problems here! But Trudeau is standing firm, saying it’s about supporting international peace and security.
So what’s the scoop?
The Trudeau government is sending yet another $500 million in military aid to Ukraine this year, continuing its trend of neglecting its own defence budget. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Bill Blair announced this lavish expenditure in Washington, D.C., at the 75th Annual NATO Summit.
Foreign aid to Ukraine from Canada has already surpassed a jaw-dropping $13.3 billion since the conflict erupted just over two years ago. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who has Ukrainian heritage, grandiosely pledged ongoing financial support last April, declaring, “We will be there until Ukraine wins the war.” The list of military aid Canada is recklessly providing includes missiles, ammunition, rocket launchers, anti-armour weapons, drones, and even Leopard battle tanks.
In a move that reeks of political posturing, the Trudeau government is playing coy about sending troops to Ukraine for training. Defence Minister Bill Blair, in a classic non-committal dodge, proclaimed on June 17 that the “circumstances are not right” for deployment. Yet, with a wink and a nudge, he added, “However, should the conditions change, we are open to that.”Sure, Canada trained Ukrainians until the brazen invasion, but now our Armed Forces are conveniently scattered in Latvia, Poland, Britain, and at home under Operation Unifor. Meanwhile, Minister Blair hypocritically insists Canada won’t send military personnel to Ukraine’s front lines.
Let’s crunch some numbers and see what Canadians think
An eye-opening Department of Finance poll from last year, revealed by Blacklock’s Reporter, exposes a startling reality: fewer than a third (32%) of Canadians are in favour of funnelling more financial aid to Ukraine. Meanwhile, 36% actively oppose continued assistance, and 33% are frustratingly indifferent.
In a baffling move earlier this year, Canada locked itself into a 10-year, $3 billion security pact with Ukraine, despite woefully missing NATO spending targets for over two decades. The government’s recent grandiose promises aim to elevate Canada’s defence spending to a mere 1.76% of GDP by 2030—still a laughable shortfall from the 2% target.
Adding to the circus, the Parliamentary Budget Office disputes this figure. Nine other NATO members are similarly failing to uphold their defence commitments. This announcement came at the end of a day filled with intense political drama as the 32-member alliance grapples with the devastating fallout of a war gone horribly wrong, as per CBC News.
Ukraine in NATO?
NATO boldly proclaimed at the Summit that Ukraine is on an “irreversible” path to membership. “We are not prolonging a war; we are ending it as soon as possible,” declared NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, throwing down the gauntlet. He emphasized that bringing Ukraine into NATO’s fold would forever deter Russia from attacking.
Meanwhile, the staggering toll includes over 11,100 Ukrainian civilians dead, per a May report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. And let’s not forget, that the monumental reconstruction and recovery efforts are expected to drain US$486 billion over the next decade.
We need to take care of our own military
This news comes amid a staggering call from over half (55%) of Canadians demanding the federal government meet the defence spending benchmark, according to an Angus Reid poll. Shockingly, nearly 30% now see military preparedness as a top priority, an explosive increase from a decade ago.
The Department of National Defence’s research reveals a striking 46% of Canadians believe the military is egregiously underfunded. When asked, “Do you feel Canada’s military is underfunded, overfunded or receives about the right amount?” a mere 26% claimed current spending is adequate, and an indifferent 23% had no opinion. Astonishingly, among those with a family member in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, a whopping 57% believe the military is grossly underfunded. Even more damning, only 27% agree that the Canadian Armed Forces have the necessary equipment to do their job, while a resounding 41% passionately disagree.
Final Thoughts

As the Trudeau government continues to channel substantial resources into foreign aid, particularly towards Ukraine, it raises significant questions about priorities and national interests. While the intent to support international peace and security is commendable, many Canadians feel that their own needs and those of the Canadian military are being neglected. The divide in public opinion highlights a growing concern over where and how taxpayer dollars are being spent.
The ongoing investment in military aid abroad seems to contrast starkly with the pressing demands at home. With a significant percentage of the population feeling that the Canadian Armed Forces are underfunded and ill-equipped, the call for reallocating resources becomes even more urgent. As Canada locks itself into long-term financial commitments internationally, it may be prudent to reassess and address domestic priorities to ensure a balanced and sustainable approach moving forward.
